Send us your family’s favorite recipe for a chance to be in the USVI’s very first hurricane cookbook!

One Territory, One Pot –
Easy Recipes For Hard Times

Here in the VI, we know how critical food is to a well made hurricane preparation plan. While it might feel like there isn’t much we can do with all the canned or boxed goods we find ourselves with, many Virgin Islanders still find creative (and delicious!) ways to spice up their meals during and following a hurricane. The USVI Storm Strong team would like to know what your favorite hurricane meals are and, possibly include your recipe in the very first One Territory, One Pot community cookbook! This cookbook will be a resource created by the community, for the community and it will give families across the VI helpful tips, tricks, and meal ideas when preparing for, facing, and recovering from a hurricane.

Plus, Celebrity Chefs!

Recipes included in the cookbook have a chance of being prepared by local celebrity chefs during a live social media event!

Here’s how to submit your recipe:

option 1: Fill out the form below

option 2: email it

Email your recipe along with a photo to usvistormstrong@gmail.com.
If you don't have access to the internet call or text your recipe and photo to 340-244-7188.

Submissions will be accepted throughout the 2020 hurricane season.

Eligibility

You may submit your recipe if:

  1. You live in the Virgin Islands or, you are from the Virgin Islands but live elsewhere, and;

  2. You have experience with hurricanes and the challenge they present, particularly in regards to food and meal preparation.

Guidelines

  • The USVI Storm Strong team and some members of the community will review all submissions and select recipes that follow the guidelines found under the “Required Components” below.

  • Recipes that can also be made using equipment that do not require electricity, such as gas/camping stoves and coal pots, will be given preferential consideration for their authenticity of conditions that usually follow most storms.

  • Individuals whose recipes were not chosen for the final product, will still be acknowledged in the cookbook.

required components

  • Your name, age and where you’re from (island and estate).

  • Tell us, which named storms have you experienced?

  • Name of the recipe.

  • The story behind your recipe. Let us know why you chose this particular recipe and/or how it came to be. Is this recipe of great significance to you, your family or community, or is it simply one that you really enjoy making, or was it one that came about out of necessity? These stories will be an essential part of this cookbook as they will help us capture your voice, and the voice of the community as a whole. We suggest that these stories be 3 to 5 sentences.

  • Specify whether your recipe is either adapted from an already existing recipe (you have made minor modifications but the final product still looks a lot like the original),  inspired by an already existing recipe (you have made some major changes but were still inspired by someone else’s recipe) or your own original recipe. If your recipe is adapted from or inspired by someone else’s, please provide the name of or, if applicable, a link to the website or book where you found that recipe.

  • The intended category for your recipe. Categories will include Beverages, Breads, Soups & Salads, Appetizers, Entrees, and Desserts.

  • A complete list of ingredients (including quantities of each) and materials needed for your recipe.

  • Detailed, easy to follow step-by-step instructions.

Optional Components

  • If possible, a description of the different ways your recipe can be adjusted for different dietary needs (i.e. vegans/vegetarians, diabetics or individuals with food allergies).

  • If possible, a clear photo  (preferably an overhead shot) of the finished item, as well as photos of you and/or your family making the recipe. Have fun with this!

  • Traditional uses or added health benefits associated with your recipe or its ingredients (for example, “soursop leaf tea may help you sleep”).

recipe translation

This is the community’s cookbook and we want to be sure all of us in the VI are represented. We will accept recipes in languages other than English. Our team will make every effort to have the recipe translated, so it can be included.

If you are interested in participating but are having technical issues, text us at 340-244-7188 for help.

Note*: In an effort to follow guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic, this cookbook will be a digital PDF file that can be found, downloaded and shared from the USVI Storm Strong website. Limited physical copies will be printed and distributed at a later date, when it is safe to do so.
